SWPA-Southwestern Psychological Association (SWPA) encourages members,
friends, and interested organizations to donate funds to the
organization for its ongoing work to promote educational and scientific
advancements related to psychology. All such donations are tax
deductable to the extent of the law under SWPA’s 501(c)(3) status.
SWPA accepts cash donations and/or securities. If the donation involves
securities, SWPA must have the freedom to convert the securities upon
receipt.
SWPA will not accept donations from individuals or organizations if
such acceptance compromises SWPA’s purposes.
SWPA will accept donations under two categories: 1) The Annual Fund,
and 2) The Endowment Fund.
The Annual Fund
Purpose: The Annual
Fund supports the necessary ongoing functions of the organization.
These functions include paying for:
- SWPA’s staff (e.g. Treasurer, Webmaster, Program Chair) for their
work for the organization.
- Direct costs incurred for meetings of the Executive Committee,
including teleconference phone charges.
- Program expenses including costs of program booklet production,
audio-visual contracts, invited speakers, and the social hour.
- Student awards for paper competitions.
Policy:
- Donations to the Annual Fund will be placed in SWPA’s regular
bank accounts and the Treasurer will spend the funds, according to SWPA
policy, as the appropriate bills are due for payment.
- Donations to the annual fund may be designated for any of the
above functions.
- While donors may designate the functions they wish to support,
donors may not influence SWPA’s established decision-making processes
for any expenditure.
- Donors may not receive personal tangible benefits, aside from
tokens of appreciation, for their donation.
- Donors will be listed in the program as Annual Fund Sponsors for
the year donations are made.
The Endowed Fund
Purpose: The Endowed
Fund provides long-term support for recurring Program Expenses. The
quality of SWPA’s convention program rests on the organization’s
ability to attract excellent invited speakers.
Structure: SWPA invests
donations to the Endowed Fund in conservative securities, works to
maintain the fund’s corpus, and uses the fund’s earnings to support
designated activities.
Donation Policy:
Donations to the Endowed Fund may be designated
or non-designated.
Designated donations:
- Designated donations are those that the donor specifies must be
used to support specific events.
- SWPA will only accept designated donations for recurring program
events of interest to psychology professionals.
- Any donor making a contribution to the Endowed Fund of $10,000 or
more may request a designated Named Lecture series:
- The donor may suggest the name for the Named Lecture series.
- The donor may specify the general content covered by the
lecture series.
- The donor may recommend speakers for the lecture series.
- Final decisions about invitations rest with the Executive
Committee and its established procedures.
- The name of the Named Lecture series and the donor’s name will
be printed in the Program.
- Donors making a contribution to the Endowed Fund of less than
$10,000 may request to be listed as a Sponsor
of a designated event:
- Donors may specify which existing event they wish to sponsor.
- Donors may recommend speakers/activities for the event.
- Final decisions about the event rest with the Executive
Committee and its established procedures.
- Donor sponsorships will appear in the published program.
- SWPA encourages donors to consider sponsoring Invited State
Representative Symposia from their state. These symposia occur once
every two years.
Non-designated donations:
- Non-designated donations are those that donors specify must be
placed in the endowment, but carry no specific instructions for program
or event support.
- Donors will be listed in the program as Endowment Sponsors for
the year in which the donation was made.
- SWPA’s Executive Committee will annually determine the
distribution of earnings in support of program expenses.
Donors may not receive personal tangible benefits, aside from tokens of
appreciation, for their donations.
Operations Policy:
- SWPA’s Executive Committee (EC), or its designee, manages the
Endowed Fund.
- The EC may not allocate expenditures from the corpus of the
Endowed Fund.
- The EC may allocate expenditures from the Endowed Fund earnings
in years when the value of the corpus has declined.
- The EC may reinvest earnings from the Endowed Fund to build the
value of the corpus. Such action must produce a restatement of corpus
value.
- Legitimate expenses for speakers include travel, lodging, meals,
and an honorarium.
- Legitimate expenses for events include direct costs incurred in
their production.
- The EC may decide to postpone a Named Lecture Series for a given
year if earnings are not sufficient to cover expenses.
- SWPA will respect any requests for donor anonymity.
Contact Person: Questions or
information about donating should be addressed to SWPA’s Treasurer,
currently Dr. Sharon Roberts, rober006@nsuok.edu
