- The MSCP (Master of Science in Counseling Psychology) program at Louisiana State
University – Shreveport is a 48-hour degree program designed to
develop professional counselors, as well as to prepare students for
further graduate study in related doctoral programs. This program
allows students to become licensed as a professional counselor in
Louisiana and other states. A 60-hour track is available for students
who plan to practice in states where this is a requirement. A thesis
option is offered for students who are interested, or who plan to
continue on to doctoral studies.
The MSCP program is designed from a scientist-practitioner model. While
primary emphasis is on clinical skills, there is also a significant
emphasis on research design and methodology. A solid background in
these areas can be beneficial if the student plans to continue their
studies past a master’s degree.
The community of Shreveport offers widely varied clinical training
opportunities, including hospitals, community mental health, jail
settings, substance abuse clinics, and private practice. There is a
broader range of possibilities as compared to many smaller university
towns. In addition, many of our students have been hired on at their
training sites after graduation.
LSUS offers three competitive graduate assistantships in the fall and
spring semesters, which pay full tuition and a stipend. Application
deadlines are in April, June and November. More information, including
contact information for program faculty and admission requirements, is
available at the MSCP website.
- The non-thesis master’s program at Stephen F. Austin
State
University is primarily designed to augment the credentials of
those
persons who were near the top of the waiting list for admission to
doctoral programs in psychology, but ultimately did not receive an
offer. This one-year curriculum will increase individuals’ chances of
being accepted upon reapplication to doctoral programs by enabling them
to earn grades in graduate-level courses and to gain valuable research
and teaching experience.
Our degree plan will also be of interest to persons desiring to
earn a master’s degree in psychology as a means of achieving their
professional goals, such as acquiring solid research skills or teaching
post-secondary courses with a masters degree. We envision our
curriculum being of considerable value to individuals currently in the
workforce, who have had some coursework in psychology (although not
necessarily a psychology major) and would now like to enhance their
professional skills and advancement potential. Optional second year
opportunities include first-hand teaching experiences and extended
research via thesis work.
All applications for admission to graduate study may be found or
accessed on the department’s website at
www.sfasu.edu/sfapsych/gradfront.htm. For additional information,
contact Dr. Kandy Stahl, Chair, Department of Psychology, P.O. Box
13046 - SFA Station, Nacogdoches, Texas 75962; phone: (936) 468-4402;
e-mail: kstahl@sfasu.edu. [posted December 15, 2008]
- The Lifespan Developmental Psychology Ph.D. program at Oklahoma
State University is currently in a growth mode. The primary goal of
the
program is produce scholars-researchers with sufficient breadth and
depth to permit successful independent and significant research. While
major emphasis is given to the preparation for research, organized and
concerted effort is also made to give students the necessary background
for teaching, practice, or any combination of these fields. The
department admits only full-time students planning to work toward the
Ph.D. degree. The M.S. degree is awarded as the first step in doctoral
training. Throughout training, students develop skills in research,
teaching, and other professional activities integral to psychology. The
Department of Psychology is proud of the academic and cultural
diversity of its students, faculty, and staff. The department
encourages applications from African American, Asian American,
Hispanic, and Native American candidates as part of its effort to
maintain and advance a rigorous and well-informed academic community.
We have several graduate slots available. Now is the time to invest in
your career - - take the next step toward becoming a developmental
psychologist. [posted October 30, 2008]
